What to expect for a Marching Band Competition

09-02-25

September 27 feels like it's a long way away, but it will be here before you know it! Are you ready to join our competition crew? Or just excited to support your band student this year? This is an overview of a typical competition day:

🎶Before the Competition

  • Students arrive at Western! Typically around 8am, sometimes earlier or later depending on performance time. They should bring: water, sunscreen, snacks, lunch (if they prefer a packed lunch), and any required gear (e.g., drillmasters!)
  • Pre-competition rehearsal at Western (sometimes with props!)
  • Volunteers arrive!
  • Load the trucks with props, gear, and instruments
  • Students get dressed in uniforms
  • Chaperones and students load the buses
  • Drive to the competition site!

🎶 At the Competition

  • Volunteers arrive at the truck and equipment staging area
  • Unload props and instruments
  • Band warms up
  • Volunteers transport props
  • Scheduled Performance Time!
  • Pack up props and instruments
  • Water and Gatorade to the students!
  • Watch other bands perform, eat concessions or packed lunches
  • Retreat (i.e., Awards Ceremony)
  • Load buses and return to Western

🎶After the Competition

  • Announce to parents the arrival time
  • Arrive at Western
  • Unload buses and trucks - the more parents help with this, the faster it goes!
  • Stow props, instruments and uniforms
  • Dismissal
